Ecological poultry production (free-range, organic); alternative slow- and medium-growing meat genotypes, alternative feeding including free-choice systems, humane stun and slaughter for small flocks, meat quality; use of natural compounds for enteric health; small flock production for local and regional food markets; integrating free-range poultry in animal grazing systems and agroforestry systems; certification programs such as certified organic, animal welfare assurance programs, American origin; role of small and mid-size farms in sustainable agriculture and rural development, sustainable agriculture education

Anne started her education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning Bachelor degrees in Zoology and Spanish in 1985. She went on to earn a Master in Animal Science at Oregon State University in 1992, and a Ph.D. in Poultry Science at the University of Arkansas in 2007. Anne completed post doctoral work in Poultry Production and Product Safety with the USDA Agricultural Service at the University of Arkansas from 2009-2010.

Currently Anne teaches agroecology, sustainable livestock, applied farming, and farm business management as faculty at Appalachian State University and assists in the development of the Goodnight Family Sustainable Development Teaching and Research Farm and Garden. Before coming to ASU she has worked to develop educational material and training on alternative poultry production for the National Center for Appropriate Technology as well as conducted contract inspections of poultry well-being in alternative production systems. Anne has also conducted rabbit research and raised rabbist commercially as a graduate student at Oregon State University. As a Peace Corps Volunteer Anne conducted outreach and research in agroforestry at the tropical research center CATIE in Costa Rica.
