Dr. Rebecca Witter and SD students recently attended the 2025 North Carolina Environmental Justice Network (NCEJN) Summit. The Summit is a community-centered event that brings together representatives of overburdened communities, researchers, lawyers, and advocates for community and coalition building, for agenda setting, for reporting research back, and for soul nourishment. This is the sixth year that Dr. Witter has taken students to the Summit. This year some of the main themes included data centers, militarization, participatory mapping, and mutual aid amidst climate crisis. Our students registered attendees, took notes, slept in the historic dorms on site, tended to the bonfire, and met [and in one case interviewed] EJ leaders from across the state. They also connected with some SD and App alumni working in EJ or intersecting fields.
