SD Students Participate in Spring Field Trips!

SD students have been busy this Spring participating in a varity of field trips as part of their classes! Students in Dr. Rick Rheingans's SD 2850 Forests and Our Future class headed out to the Middle Fork of the New River to participate in a live staking and trash clean up event. The event was spearhead by student Flynn Connelly who organized it as part of his Senior Capstone project in coordination with the environmental organization MountainTrue. SD alum A.G. Worley also joined the group. MountainTrue is "a community-powered nonprofit working across the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains to protect our forests, safeguard clean water, and build healthier communities." Students in Dr. Brian Burke's SD 3375 Sustainable Economics and Community Development class headed to The Industrial Commons, a co-op and co-op incubator in Morganton, N.C., and their visit was coordinated by SD alum Savannah Little. SD alums Meredith Maiken and Michael Weiss also now work there. As a nonprofit, The Industrial Commons is "driven by the vision of revitalizing our rural economy to be inclusive and supportive of families from all backgrounds, committed to a comprehensive strategy aimed at creating an economic ecosystem where businesses are interconnected and mutually supportive," and focused on "launching and nurturing community-owned, for-profit businesses."
