Shawn holds an active license to practice veterinary medicine and surgery in North Carolina. He received a Masters of Arts in Appalachian Studies with a concentration in Sustainable Development from Appalachian State University, as well.  He has done Veterinary Outreach in Honduras and led field groups of veterinary students and DVMs to LA Moskitia, Honduras from 2005-2009. Shawn has served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in a couple of Agroecology courses at ASU and as a lab instructor. He developed and managed online instructional support courses as well as grading assignments. While a student in Appalachian Studies, he received the Goodnight Family Sustainable Development Scholarship.

His thesis was on Ethnoveterinary Medicine in the Blue Ridge of North Carolina and Tennessee.
