Who We Are

Frontline to Farm is a program funded through the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program 2020-49400-32401 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and works in partnership with Appalachian State University's Department of Sustainable Development.  This program helps military veterans and other beginning farmers get started in farming and improving sustainable practices.  We focus on ecological and humane livestock production which includes: 

  • Rasing swine with agroforestry practicesfinalinfo
  • Raising grass-fed cattle
  • Raising poultry on pasture
  • Exploring the role animals play in soil health
  • Integrating livestock with crop and horticultural production
  • Protecting biodiversity
  • Reducing fossil fuel usage 
  • Increasing social justice in food systems

  • Equal access to healthy foods
We offer several different resources such as online educational modules, hands-on training, networking, and internships.
