Sustainable Development Students Study Abroad in Costa Rica

Embarking on an unforgettable adventure, the Sustainable Development (SD) Department has just kicked off the Tropical Forest Ecology and Development study abroad trip in Costa Rica! Over the past week, SD faculty Dr. Rick Rheingans, Biology faculty Julia Showalter, and Appalachian State students have been immersed in the captivating landscapes of Monteverde—a high-altitude haven perched at 5,000 feet atop the continental divide. Every day, students have opportunities to dive deeper into the rich tapestry of Costa Rican cloud forests, community-managed ecological reserves, and the vibrant rural communities that remind us a bit of the High Country of North Carolina. According to Rheingans, "One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is the genuine connection we're building with our local Costa Rican families and the shared challenge of protecting delicate forest ecosystems while sustaining local livelihoods. As we navigate between bustling tourist hubs and tranquil rural communities, we’re not only learning about tropical ecology and development firsthand but also the power of community and resilience."
