Requirements and recommendations

Sustainable Development students must meet the following requirements to be approved for an internship:

  • Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Students must be degree-seeking with at least Junior standing.
  • Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture students have two options for internships. For SD 4900 to count for IIIB Focus Area credit, students are strongly encouraged to take SD 3900 Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture before they do an internship; under most circumstances, internships on farms will not be approved for credit unless the students has already taken and done well in 3900. SD 4910 is an advanced internship in which students complete a significant project developed in conjunction with an outside business, research facility, non-profit or government agency, and report their results in a public seminar and written report. SD 3900, SD 3800, senior standing, and permission of instructor are prerequisites for the SD 4910 internship experience.
  • Community, Regional and Global Development (CRGD) students seeking to count their SD 4900 internship for credit in the IIIB Development Elective requirement must do an internship relevant to development; under most circumstances SD 4900 will not be approved to count for this requirement unless the student has already taken SD 3400 beforehand. To count in III C Geographic Area Studies, IIID Career-Oriented Focus Area or IIIE Skills, the internship must be relevant to that requirement, and it is strongly recommended the student take SD 3400 in advance of the internship. Internships conducted through study abroad are encouraged and can be used to count for most CRGD requirements.
  • Environmental Studies students seeking to count SD 4900 for IIIC Career-Oriented Focus Area or IIID Skills, the internship must be relevant to the requirement, and it is strongly recommended the student take SD 2600 and either SD 2800 or SD 3750 in advance of the internship.
  • BA students seeking to count SD 4900 for credit in IVB Career-Oriented Focus Area or IVC Skills must complete an internship relevant to that requirement. Students should consult their advisor for courses that may be recommended to take in advance of the internship.
